ADN vs. BSN: Choosing Your First Nursing Degree

Compare the entire route to your goal, including prerequisites, clinical time, and any later degree completion.

Two education routes, one license to investigate

An associate degree in nursing and a prelicensure bachelor’s degree are education pathways that can lead toward RN licensure. The degree and the license are different credentials: graduating does not itself grant permission to practice. The Bureau of Labor Statistics identifies associate, bachelor’s, and approved diploma routes into registered nursing. Check your intended state’s requirements before enrolling.

Compare calendars from the same starting point

Request a term-by-term plan that begins with the courses you still need. A four-semester nursing sequence may sit after prerequisite study. A traditional bachelor’s plan can include general education within its advertised duration. Admission cycles, transfer decisions, and the availability of clinical places can change the date you actually finish.

Consider whether a later bachelor’s is part of your plan

If you intend to earn an ADN first and then complete an RN-to-BSN, request a transfer evaluation from the intended completion school. Ask which courses transfer, which must be repeated, and how many credits you must take there. Compare the combined route with a direct BSN. Do not assume that every associate credit will satisfy every university requirement.

Build a useful shortlist

For each school, record prerequisite time, nursing-sequence time, the likely weekly schedule, clinical travel, and the remaining cost after grants or scholarships. Look at job requirements from employers where you want to work. Employer preferences and graduate-school prerequisites can help you decide whether a bachelor’s fits your longer-term plans.

Questions for admissions

Ask: When do I enter the nursing major? Is admission to the college separate from admission to nursing? Which prerequisites expire? Who arranges clinical placements? What happens if a required course is unavailable? Save the school’s answers alongside the official curriculum, rather than comparing degree labels alone.
