How to Compare RN-to-BSN Programs
For registered nurses, the best comparison starts with a personal transfer-credit evaluation and a realistic work schedule.
Confirm that this is the right entry route
RN-to-BSN programs build on previous nursing education and RN licensure. They are distinct from prelicensure programs for someone starting a first nursing qualification. Ask about license requirements at admission and during any practice experience, including restrictions tied to your state.
Get the remaining credit count
A school may advertise the price of core nursing courses while your degree plan also requires general education. Ask for a written evaluation showing transferred credits, credits awarded for licensure, remaining courses, and the minimum credits required at the university. Use that remaining course list when comparing cost.
Online does not always mean the same thing
UMass Boston’s RN-to-BS includes online study and a 72-hour clinical experience. UMass Lowell’s program page describes asynchronous study without a clinical component. Central Connecticut lists online nursing classes with community practice experiences. Compare the requirements of the specific program rather than relying on an online label.
Check eligibility beyond the delivery format
UMass Lowell’s published admission criteria specify an unencumbered RN license from Massachusetts or New Hampshire. An online offering is therefore not automatically available to every RN. Ask the school to confirm that it can admit you where you live and support any required practice experience.
Ask for a sustainable completion plan
Request both a full-time and part-time schedule. Identify live class meetings, assignment deadlines, practice hours, and courses offered only in certain terms. Ask how taking a break affects progression. If an employer contributes to tuition, confirm reimbursement timing and any continued-employment obligation directly with the employer.
