NURSING EDUCATION GUIDE
How to Compare Nursing School Costs
Turn an advertised tuition figure into a budget for your own remaining education.
Begin with the unit and year
Write down whether each price is per credit, per term, per year, or for a defined set of courses. Record the academic period and residency category. A price for nursing-core credits is not necessarily the cost of the entire degree, and a university-wide average is not an individualized nursing bill.
Use a consistent worksheet
For every program, total the credits you still need at the applicable rate. Add mandatory program and university fees, prerequisites, books, equipment, required checks or clearances, and clinical travel. Estimate living expenses separately so you can compare both educational charges and the overall household budget.
Keep grants separate from loans
Ask the financial aid office for an explanation of the aid offered to you. Grants and scholarships can reduce the amount you need to fund; loans provide financing that generally must be repaid. Work-study involves earned wages. Check renewal conditions and how aid changes with part-time study or a second bachelor’s degree.
Watch for differences in what is included
Our initial tuition examples show why the fine print matters. UMFK publishes a core-course amount and says additional general education is charged separately. UMass Lowell lists a per-credit rate and additional fees. Use each program’s source notes to identify exclusions before treating two figures as comparable.
Bring the calendar into the budget
Estimate when deposits, tuition, and other charges come due. Ask whether aid or employer reimbursement arrives before or after payment. Consider changes to work hours and clinical travel. A shorter program may reduce some living expenses but require a more demanding weekly schedule.
Request a written estimate
Before committing, request an estimate based on your transfer evaluation, residency, planned start term, and course load. Keep a copy with the date. Published rates can change, and only the school can confirm your actual charges and aid eligibility.
